Building
Our joint venture, Delta Reef Gumatj (DRG) builds houses, schools and workspaces that suit our community, climate and budget. We limit the costs of building in a remote community by manufacturing our own materials such as concrete blocks and timber roof trusses, recycling pre-used appliances such as air conditioners and training up locals to be builders.
We are also currently involved in the rebuild of 80 cyclone-ravaged homes on the island of Galiwinku. Our involvement has included the manufacture of materials in Gunyangara, and providing project managers to carry out a slow build in Galiwinku. This project is a slow build so that 10 locals can train onsite and gain a Cert II in building and construction.
“We may not build a house as quickly as others, but we give them real skills that they can take to another job”, Mick Martin, DRG General Manager
Manufacturing
Bricks & Concrete
Our joint venture, Delta Reef Gumatj (DRG) makes Besser blocks to Australian standard AS3700 at our Brickmaking Plant and creates concreate and gravel at our Batch Plant. We use the materials to build our own houses and workspaces and we supply to builders throughout North East Arnhem Land. Call us and place your order today.
Timber
We source stringybark eucalyptus trees to make strong timber roof trusses and decking. We also make beautiful furniture, homewares and cultural instruments that are popular with locals and visitors.
To minimise the environmental impact of sourcing timber, we plan the removal of trees with Rio Tinto operations.
- We agree with Rio Tinto on the location of the next open cut mine.
- We go into the area selecting and cutting down trees.
- Our timber mill cuts the wood.
- Our sawmill refines the wood.
- Our woodwork shop makes roof trusses, decking, furniture, homewares and cultural instruments. We also supply timber throughout the NT.
- Once mining operations finish Rio Tinto restore the area the original state.
Mining
“We are determined to be a part of the economic life of this nation and to use our assets for the betterment of our people’s lives,” Galarrwuy Yunupingu, Chairman
Our 955-hectare mine 40km from Nhulunbuy will soon be in operation extracting 150,000 tonne bauxite a year for the Asian market.
We designed the mine to double as a mine-training centre, giving our people the experience they need to get a job in mining. The concept developed when we discovered many of our people had completed mining courses without ever operating mining machinery. Our training provides practical experience and offers support for reading, writing and maths needs.
