Early Learning (0-4 years)

“I know early learning is good for our future. I can see my son is having fun and being educated at the same time. And so am I”, mother in the FaFT program.

We provide a positive learning experience for parents and their children 0 – 4 years with a program called Families as First Teachers (FaFT). From 8am every weekday morning our bus collects parents and their children. On arrival, they enjoy a free nutritious breakfast before a morning of reading, learning games, health and hygiene. At 11.30am, a hot lunch is served before cleaning and packing up.

More than 30 children and their parents are enrolled, a huge increase for an area that was not participating in early learning.

School For Kindy to Year 2 (5-7 years)

We provide a local school for our young students. Previously they would make an hour round trip to Yirrkala. Now it is just a short trip ensuring they get to school with lots of energy.

Taught by a teacher from Nhulunbuy Primary School and helped by local translators, they enjoy reading, writing, numbers and play. Students are also improving their technology skills using iPads to learn.

After Year 2, students go to Nhulunbuy Primary School for Year 3 to Year 6

Support for Kindy to Year 12 (5-17 years)

Getting our children and our teenagers to school is very important. Every school day from 6.30am – 2.30pm, we open the Gunyangara School Attendance Office providing everyone with a nutritious breakfast. We provide Kindy to Year 6 students with missing uniform items, lunch and a bus to and from school. We also give out rewards for improved attendance. Parents receive a grocery or power voucher and students get treats or toys.

Many students come along to the office and attendance rates have improved dramatically.

If a student does not turn up at the School Attendance Office, we will visit their house and encourage them to come along. This is all part of the Remote School Attendance Strategy

After School Activities (5 – 17 years)

Next to the School Attendance Office we are building an after school centre to keep our children and our teenagers busy and entertained. The centre will have a range of computers, gaming and indoor sports to enjoy. There will also be hip hop dance classes. To enter the centre they must attend school that day.
