Education is vital for the development of the Gumatj clan, as the education of our children today shapes our future leaders of tomorrow.
Gumatj Corporation plays a significant role in the development and operation of Dhupuma Barker School, a bilingual school for Yolŋu children in Gunyangara. In partnership with Barker College and the Yothu Yindi Foundation, we helped establish the school, which opened in April 2021.
Dhupuma Barker offers education from Kindergarten to Year 6, integrating traditional Yolŋu knowledge with the Australian curriculum, thereby enabling students to gain a well-rounded education that respects their cultural heritage.
The school has achieved high engagement and attendance rates, reflecting its success in providing quality education locally. Future plans include expanding to middle years education to continue supporting the community's educational needs.
