Substandard housing has been a reality for our people. Complex and costly processes for leasing on Aboriginal land and the costs of building in a remote community has made home ownership difficult. To address these hurdles we:

1. Pioneered a new type of leasing arrangement. The Gumatj-owned Ngarrariyal Aboriginal Corporation now holds a 99-year township lease of Gunyangara. This removes the need to go through the Northern Land Council to gain approval for developments. The 4-5 generation lease also provides banks and other lenders greater confidence mortgages can be paid.

2. Are limiting building costs by manufacturing our own materials such as concrete blocks and timber roof trusses, recycling pre-used appliances such as air conditioners and training up locals to be builders.

On our new sub-division, we are also building houses to reward and motivate our long-term and valuable employees.
